Description
This (wild) Atlantic side of Dominica has traditionally been agricultural and deeply rooted in culture, and provides soft and hard options for a deep immersion into the nature, local village life, and culture.
There are easy rainforest adventures with swimming in the Emerald Pool and the river basins at Belles, and small farms to visit with produce sampling – one in particular focuses on cacao and cottage scale handmade chocolate is available. Time with the locals processing staples is also possible, and depending on the time of year we visit the village school. We can also adventure along the nature trail at Rosalie and enjoy a crash course in marine species conservation and protection of the local flora.
The rugged and green landscapes and imposing waterfalls, also allows for hard adventure here as well. There are short hikes to Glasse, and up-river adventures to the towering Sari Sari and Victoria Waterfalls.
Prepare to skirt the rugged terrain to access the pools at Glasse, and to scramble over large rocks and trek through secondary forests to get to the waterfalls, all of which promise invigorating swims.
Depending on the time of year and the accommodation, there may be opportunities for turtle watching or turtle excavation – as Leatherback, Green and Hawksbill Sea turtles’ nest and hatch along eastern beach fronts. Turtle season offers a vacation experience that is unforgettable and magical.
