Description

The Boiling lake is located in the heart of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the world’s deepest boiling lake and is actually a flooded fumarole, a crack through which gases escape from the molten lava below. The natural basin of the Boiling Lake collects the rainfall from the surrounding hills and from two small streams which empty into the area. The water seeps through the porous bottom to the hot lava below where it is trapped and heated to boiling point. The lake is almost 30 meters in diameter.

The journey there is an experience in itself. It winds through the forest, over sharp ridges, and encounters volcanic rivers, streams and boiling mud. Halfway there you stop at “Breakfast River” It is the last source of fresh water before you ascend the “floating bridge” ridge and descend into the volcanic Valley of Desolation.

The Valley of Desolation is one of the most visually arresting and geologically significant sites in the Caribbean, serving as a primary highlight for adventure-seekers on the Nature Island. As you emerge from the dense jungle of the high-elevation forest, the green canopy abruptly gives way to a prehistoric-looking basin with streams streams that vary in colour from normal clear water to milky blue, black, white, yellow and orange.

The trail itself is almost eight miles. It is a three-hour walk each way, and that amount of time should be allowed for. It is a technical and challenging hike, and well worth the adventure.
